Mission Statement: To empower local community programs to improve the health and quality of life of the seniors they serve so that no one is left hungry or isolated.

While 87% of Meals on Wheels organizations are federally funded, 13% are independent charitable organizations—and Sarasota falls within the 13%. One might assume that a lack of federal funding would severely inhibit our chapter, but the people behind the Sarasota Meals on Wheels refuse to allow a little thing like no money get in the way of helping as many isolated and food-insecure seniors as possible within our community. The seniors who receive assistance from Meals on Wheels are not necessarily poverty stricken. Some are mentally or physically impaired or ill and without resources. The standard is that they are unable, for whatever reason, to provide or prepare a meal in their home. For many of these seniors the visit from Meals on Wheels brings not only a generous and nutritious meal, but also sustenance of another kind: a wellness check, a human connection, a person showing care. Executive Director Marjorie Broughton has chefs working in an onsite kitchen making nutritious 1,100-calorie meals and an army of volunteers, mostly retirees, to deliver those meals.

Give — Your Time: COVID changed the landscape of available volunteers for Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels Sarasota needs volunteers to drive and deliver meals. Please visit their website to learn more.
