Cakes by Ron

“When my dad, Ron, started the business 35 years ago, he was adamant about paying meticulous attention to detail to every step of the process,” says Nathan Zammit, who, alongside his dad and sister Laura, keep the family business thriving. “He was strict that we keep it the same way. Everything is handmade in small batches, by scratch—no shortcuts. Everything is done with intention. It’s long hours but it yields a better product.”.

If you’ve lived in this area for any amount of time, you’ve most likely had a Cakes by Ron concoction, as they are a major go-to for parties, events, and random weekdays when you just need a sweet pick-me-up. And pick you up, they shall. Cakes by Ron confections are colorful, whimsical, unique, and, most importantly, all-out scrumptious.

If you need a complex, customized cake, they’ve got you covered, but if you just want to run in and grab a quick treat from the bakery case, they’ve got more than enough offerings to please your kiddos, co-workers, mom, neighbor, you name it. The cupcakes are large, but not so big that they overwhelm you. The flavors are rich and bold, but because of the quality they lack the cloying saturation of desserts made with subpar syrups and big-box ingredients. The texture of the cakes is moist and dense without being remotely heavy. Essentially, Cakes by Ron knows exactly hot to hit the sweet spot.

“I’ve never sent something out the door that I wouldn’t enjoy getting myself,” says Nathan. Clearly, he has high standards.

He also has a ton of fun. Nathan gets a huge thrill from creating new flavor combinations. He combs the aisles of international grocery stores and works on exciting pairings like East meets West, North meets South, and so on. “Every week I try to come up with something new,” he says. “Sometimes it’s phenomenal, sometimes it tastes like hot trash, but I love experimenting until I create something delicious.”

Ultimately, what comes across most from this family business is that they truly care about each step, from customer interaction to signed receipt, and they derive a ton of joy from all the different types of events and requests they receive, from standard birthdays to divorce parties. “We spend a lot of time on each customized cake because we spend so much time on each customer,” explains Nathan. “We don’t just ticket-take ideas, we work with you to elevate the idea to give you something unexpected.”

Well, Nathan, expect to see a lot of us there this week.
