Sarasota has lost a light—one that grew quietly, generously, and with deep love for the land and the people who tend it. Barbara Powell Harris was tragically taken from us, and with her passing our community feels an ache that words struggle to hold.
Barbara was a true pioneer of local food in Sarasota. Long before it was a movement or a trend, she believed in nourishment that came from the soil beneath our feet and the hands of neighbors working together. Through Orange Blossom Garden, she cultivated far more than fruits and vegetables. She cultivated connection. She cultivated care. She cultivated hope.
Her garden was a sanctuary—where orange blossoms perfumed the air, where learning happened organically, and where everyone was welcome. Barbara understood that food is not just sustenance; it is memory, culture, healing, and love. She lived that truth every day, sharing her knowledge freely and lifting others up with kindness and patience.
Barbara’s legacy is alive in every seed saved, every meal shared, and every person who now sees local food as an act of community and compassion. Her influence will continue to ripple through Sarasota’s gardens, kitchens, and hearts for generations.
We grieve this profound loss, and we honor Barbara by continuing the work she so beautifully began—growing food, growing community, and growing love.
May her memory be a blessing, and may her garden forever bloom in us.
