Poke Party

poke-party-01.jpg

The flavorful Hawaiian rice bowl known as poke has proliferated in the mainland states in recent years and has rapidly gained popularity. This delicious bowl traditionally consists of small pieces of raw fish, coated lightly with a soy-based sauce and served with steamed rice.

Traditional poke highlights its star protein by pairing it with a delicately flavored sauce and light aromatics. And because “poke” literally means “to cut into pieces,” small bites are key.

Although the original versions of poke are made with fresh raw fish, poke can also be made with tofu for vegans and vegetarians, and even with chicken for those averse to fish, whether due to allergy or simply taste preferences.

Some of the more exotic ingredients found in these poke recipes can be found at your local Asian market. Luckily, Sarasota has at least three such shops and each offers a vast inventory of fascinating foods. Don’t be afraid to ask the shopkeeper for help and recommendations.

You’ll be surprised at some of the amazing groceries you will come across. Remember to check out the snack aisle while you’re there!
