VISIT A SOUTHWEST FLORIDA FARM

Our region is blessed with an abundance of fresh produce, including melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, and peppers. These crops are cultivated by hardworking farmers who contribute to the booming agriculture industry in DeSoto, Charlotte, and Sarasota counties. Despite the behind-the-scenes nature of this industry, it provides over 76,000 jobs in the region. Sarasota County alone has 61,033 acres of farmland, and Charlotte County has 112,000 acres. Meanwhile, DeSoto County boasts more than 330,000 acres of farmland, with blueberries, watermelon, and citrus being the top three fruits grown. In fact, DeSoto is consistently ranked as a top producer of oranges in Florida. It’s clear that farming is a significant business in our region, with local growers working hard to provide us with fresh produce for generations to come.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO LIVE AND WORK ON A FARM?

Sarasota, DeSoto, and Charlotte County areas are home to groves, ranches, dairies, gardens—and our friendly farmers welcome you to visit and learn about what they do and why. Visiting a farm is a unique opportunity to see firsthand how food is produced, right from the very beginning.

BE SAFE: Seeing live animals and impressive farm machinery up close can be thrilling, but always be very careful and listen to your tour guide for instructions.

BE CASUAL: Wear comfortable footwear and clothes that can stand up to a bit of work and dirt. You may find yourself walking on dirt roads and uneven terrain. And of course remember to wear a hat and sunscreen.
