Letter from the Editor: Fall 2024
In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton’s devastating impact on our community, we have faced unimaginable challenges. Homes have been damaged or lost, local businesses shuttered, and the landscape we cherish has been transformed overnight. Yet amid the destruction, the resilience of our community shines brightly. Neighbors came together, offering support and resources to one another, showcasing the indomitable spirit that defines us. Local farmers rallied to restore our beloved markets, and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure that those in need received assistance.
As we begin to rebuild, we find strength in our unity. Together, we continue to rise, reflecting the tenacity and heart that make Suncoast so special. I encourage you to support local businesses across our community with the #SupportThe941 to show your love for all things local.
In this issue of Edible Sarasota magazine we are proud to share the annual Farm Guide. Proudly sponsored by Visit Sarasota, Visit Charlotte, and Visit DeSoto counties, this guide serves as a vital resource to connect our community with the rich agricultural landscape that defines our region. This comprehensive guide highlights local farms, markets, and artisans, showcasing the diverse array of fresh produce and artisanal products available right in our backyard. Explore seasonal offerings, learn about sustainable farming practices, and discover the stories behind the dedicated individuals who cultivate our food. This initiative not only promotes economic growth but also strengthens our community bonds through the shared love of local food and the land that nourishes us. Now, more than ever, our farmers need us.
I’ve been having a moment with oysters the past year. On any given day, you may find me at Brine in Gulf Gate ordering them one at a time from their list that includes anywhere from seven to 12 varieties. I treat the menu like a scorecard, making notes until my next visit. This issue’s cover celebrates these incredible bivalves, which not only tantalize our taste buds but also play a crucial role in our local waters. I am thrilled to share the story of how this local restaurant sources from dedicated oyster farmers, reminding us of the connection between our culinary delights and the health of our environment.
As we wrap up this issue, I invite you to immerse yourself in the vibrant stories and flavors that define our community. From the dedicated local farms that nurture our land to the exquisite libations crafted by passionate artisans, every page is a celebration of the connections we share. Thank you for being a part of our journey—together, we can continue to cultivate a thriving, sustainable food culture.
Warm wishes,
