Waste not.

As I enjoy another fall harvest I am awed by the fact that about a third of the planet’s food goes to waste. In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, food waste goes against the moral grain. So what happens to the third of the food the world produces that never gets consumed? Much is lost during the picking and sorting process, spoils during shipping, is discarded at supermarkets or just goes uneaten and forgotten at the bottom of your vegetable drawer. In this issue of Edible Sarasota we show you how you can help reduce waste at the store, at a restaurant, at home, and in our community. Take a look, and consider which of these suggestions make sense for you.

There wasn’t much waste to be found when we “let the dogs out” on our doggy-dining field trip. We spent the day with eight of our favorite four-legged friends exploring where to dine on the Suncoast. We stopped at outdoor cafés, shaded patios, and even a brewery. Follow our trail and your dog will be sure to be wagging with joy on your next trip out.

And then we introduce you to a fifth-generation family of sausage makers. Geier’s Sausage Kitchen uses century-old recipes at their longstanding establishment in Sarasota. Strap on your lederhosen and tighten up your dirndl: Oktoberfest is here!

Once again, we have partnered with our good friends at Visit Sarasota County and The Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to bring you the Local Farm Guide. Sarasota and Bradenton are home to groves, ranches, dairies, and community gardens. Locally grown food tastes better, is better for you, supports local families, builds our community, and is an investment in the future. We offer you a full list of local farmers markets and community events, plus our seasonal food guide.

Seasonal ingredients are so plentiful in the fall and the Edible Test Kitchen has been creating recipes to usher in the new season. From a comforting risotto to a new twist on PHO, we have taken full advantage of this season’s harvest. Please check out ediblesarasota. com for more great recipes!
